Interoception & Proprioception: A Parent Guide

Beyond sight, sound, and touch, your child relies on two internal senses to feel safe and regulated. When these systems misfire, 'behavior' problems are often actually sensory problems.

Proprioception: The Body Position Sense

Proprioception tells your brain where your body parts are in relation to each other and how much force you are using. It's why you can walk up stairs without looking at your feet.

Signs of seeking proprioception:

  • Crashing into walls, furniture, or people.
  • Stomping while walking.
  • Chewing on clothing or objects.
  • Preferring tight clothing or heavy blankets.

To help, try heavy work activities like wall pushes, animal walks, or using a weighted blanket.

Vestibular vs proprioceptive: a quick distinction

These two are easy to confuse, and the tools are different. The vestibular system is coded in the inner ear and responds to movement, gravity, and speed. The proprioceptive system is coded in the muscles and joints and responds to push, pull, lift, and carry.

Interoception: The Internal Sense

Interoception is the sense of the internal state of the body. It helps us feel and understand what is going on inside us. This includes physical sensations like hunger and thirst, but also emotional sensations.

Signs of interoceptive difficulties:

  • Not knowing when they are hungry or full.
  • High pain tolerance (or very low).
  • Difficulty with toilet training.
  • Sudden 'out of nowhere' meltdowns (because they didn't feel the stress building).

How they work together

These two senses are the foundation of self-regulation. If a child can't feel their body (proprioception) and can't feel their internal needs (interoception), they cannot stay calm. Most sensory diets focus heavily on proprioception because it is 'organizing'—it gives the brain the steady input it needs to quiet the noise from other senses.

What is the difference between interoception and proprioception?

Proprioception is the sense of where your body is in space (muscles and joints), while interoception is the sense of what is happening inside your body (heartbeat, hunger, thirst, bathroom needs). Proprioception helps you move; interoception helps you feel.

What is the difference between vestibular and proprioceptive?

Vestibular is the movement and balance sense, centred in the inner ear; it tells you whether you are moving, tilted, turning, or still. Proprioception is the body-position and effort sense, centred in muscles and joints; it tells you where your limbs are and how much force you are using. A child who spins and swings is usually a vestibular seeker, while a child who crashes, pushes, and hugs hard is usually a proprioceptive seeker — and the same child can be both.

Why does my child seem to forget to eat or use the toilet?

Those are interoceptive signals, not behaviour. Hunger, thirst, a full bladder, and even emotional stress all travel through the interoceptive system. When interoceptive awareness is low, the child only notices a need once it becomes overwhelming. A pause-and-name routine, a body-needs visual schedule, and predictable timing (not a debate) are more effective than reminders or consequences.
