How this site is funded
Sensory Steps participates in affiliate programmes. When you buy through some of the product links on this site, we may receive a small commission from the retailer. The price you pay is exactly the same as it would be otherwise.
This is how we keep the site running, pay our clinical reviewer, and continue publishing new guides. Without affiliate revenue, the site would rely on display advertising — which we have chosen not to use because it clutters pages and slows them down for the parents who need them most.
Rules we hold ourselves to
- Commission rates never influence which products or categories we recommend.
- We do not accept payment for placement, ranking, or a positive review.
- We recommend against products we consider unsafe or badly matched, even where they pay well — and we say why.
- Where the honest answer is "you do not need to buy anything", the guide says that instead of manufacturing a purchase.
- Every recommendation is subject to the same clinical review as the rest of the page.
You can read the full details of our editorial process on our editorial policy page, including how we test products, how claims are reviewed, and how we handle corrections.
Which links are affiliate links
Outbound links to retailers may be affiliate links. Internal links between pages on this site, links to research and standards bodies, and links to charities and advocacy organisations never are.
For example, our guides to sensory toys, noise-cancelling headphones, and weighted blankets contain product links that may be affiliate links. Our sensory glossary and SPD checklist contain no affiliate links at all.
Prices and availability
Prices and stock change constantly and specifications are sometimes revised without notice. Always confirm the current price, size range, and safety specification on the retailer's page before buying. We update our comparison charts regularly, but a price shown in a guide may have changed since the page was last reviewed.
Our comparison charts — such as the chewelry comparison chart and the weighted blanket comparison chart — list specifications that we have verified against manufacturer data. Where a specification changes, we update the chart or note the change.
Amazon Associates disclosure
Sensory Steps is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Amazon, the Amazon logo, AmazonSupply, and the AmazonSupply logo are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates.
Why this matters for your child
Sensory tools are not cheap, and a badly matched product is worse than no product at all — it wastes money and, more importantly, it can increase a child's distress. Our affiliate model lets us keep every guide free and open, while paying for the clinical review that makes our recommendations reliable.
If you would rather not use affiliate links, you can always search for the same product by name on any retailer. We list full product names and specifications so you can find them independently.
