What does an NRR rating mean?

The NRR rating is a laboratory measure of how much hearing protection can reduce noise under specified test conditions. It is not a promise that a child will experience the full number in every setting: fit, hair, glasses, head shape, and how long the defenders stay sealed all affect real-world performance. Use the rating to narrow the choice, not to chase the largest number.

For a quick rule of thumb, start around 22–27 dB NRR when a child still needs to hear a teacher or caregiver. Reserve stronger industrial-style protection for short, very loud exposures and check with an audiologist for repeated or high-risk noise exposure.

How to read a rating before you buy

  • Check whether the figure is NRR or SNR; subtract about four to compare an SNR to an NRR.
  • Ignore single-frequency claims such as "31 dB at 2 kHz" — that is the best-case band, not the average.
  • Match head circumference before rating: a leaky seal loses more decibels than any spec gains.
  • Prefer low clamp force for daily wear; high clamp force is tolerable for twenty minutes, not a school day.

Decibel questions parents ask

What is the difference between NRR and SNR?

NRR is the US rating and SNR is the European one. They are measured differently, and SNR typically reads three to five decibels higher than NRR for the same cup, so a 28 dB SNR pair is roughly comparable to a 24 dB NRR pair. Never compare the two figures directly across brands.

How many decibels of reduction does a child need?

For most children, 22–27 dB NRR is the useful band. Below that, shops and assemblies still overwhelm; above it, speech gets muffled enough that the child misses the teacher and stops wearing them.

Is a higher decibel rating always better?

No. Over-attenuation is a real problem: a 31 dB pair blocks the warning shout and the teacher along with the hand dryer, and children remove them. Match the rating to the environment rather than buying the biggest number.

Are ear defenders safe to wear all day?

Continuous all-day use is not recommended. Use them for identified triggers — canteens, corridors, assemblies, travel — and take them off in quiet settings so the auditory system keeps getting ordinary input.
