Sensory Tools for Kids: A Parent's Guide by Sensory System

You bought three sensory toys and none of them worked. That is almost never a product problem — it is a matching problem. Here is how to work out which sensory system your child is asking about first, then choose the tool.

First, identify: is your child sensory-seeking or avoiding?

Every recommendation below depends on this one distinction. Sensory seekers do not get enough input from ordinary daily life, so they generate their own. Sensory avoiders get far too much and spend their energy escaping it. Buying a seeker's tool for an avoider is exactly how you end up with a cupboard of unused toys.

Signs of a sensory seeker

Most children seek in some systems and avoid in others: a child can crave deep pressure and crash into the sofa all afternoon while being genuinely unable to tolerate a hand dryer. Treat each system separately rather than labelling the whole child.

Auditory tools

Tactile tools

Tactile work splits cleanly by profile. Seekers need contained, rich texture; avoiders need graded exposure and a way to opt out at any point.

Sensory bins

A vest gives constant, portable deep pressure and is far more school-compatible than a blanket. Typical use is twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off — continuous wear reduces the effect as the nervous system adapts.

Crash pads

For visual seekers

  • Liquid motion timers and bubble tubes. Predictable, contained visual input that calms rather than overstimulates.
  • Light projectors. Star projectors or wave projectors turn a bedroom into a regulated visual environment.
  • Fibre optic lights and sensory bottles. Portable, controllable visual input for on-the-go regulation.

Interoception and Proprioception

Beyond the five basic senses, your child relies on two "hidden" internal systems to feel regulated: Proprioception (body position) and Interoception (internal body states).

How to support interoceptive development

  • Body scanning check-ins. Three times a day, ask: "What do you notice in your body right now?" Start with obvious signals (heartbeat after running) and build to subtle ones (hunger, tension).
  • Visual schedules for body needs. A checklist with pictures: hungry, thirsty, tired, need toilet, need movement, need quiet. The child points to what they need before they can verbalize it.
  • Temperature and pressure input. Warm baths, cold water on hands, weighted blankets — these strong body signals help children notice internal states.

  • Your child's sensory responses are escalating rather than stabilizing despite consistent tool use
  • Sensory avoidance is preventing participation in everyday activities (school, family outings, self-care)
  • Your child is unable to communicate what they need, even with supports
  • You are seeing regression in skills your child previously had
  • Sensory seeking behaviors are putting your child or others at risk

An OT will not pathologize your child's sensory profile. A good occupational therapist helps you understand the nervous system behind the behavior and builds a sensory diet that fits your family's real life, not a clinical ideal.
